Introduction
J2M3 Raiden Control Surfaces from CMK is another set in a range of upgrades for Hasegawa's venerable 1/72 J2M3 Raiden "Jack" model. This review is of J2M3 Raiden Control Surfaces, set No. 7394, one of six (6) sets for the Hasegawa J2M. The other five are J2M3 Raiden:
    Cockpit, set 7292
    Armament Set, set 7393
    Wing Flaps, set 7395
Wheel Wells and Covers, set 7396
    Seat with Belts, item Q72305
(Part of CMK's Quick & Easy range.)

Mitsubishi's rotund Raiden (Thunderbolt) is a favorite subject for Japanese Naval Air Force modelers, and Hasegawa's kit was considered the best 1/72 model "Jack" before Sword released one c.2011. Hasegawa released their J2M in 1977 and while it was - and still is - a competent model, it is long in the tooth with detail not up to snuff for discriminating modelers.

CMK elevates detail with several sets to upgrade and enhance Hasegawa's model, including this control surfaces set.

The Set
This set consists of seven (7) parts cast in gray resin. Casting is excellent with no air pocks, warping, seams, sinks, or flash. The surface texture is smooth. Each part is attached to a hefty pour block. It looks like CMK molded a shallow line to assist in parting the pieces from those "sprues." The parts are:
    Rudder
    Ailerons
    Horizontal stabilizers
    Elevators

Detail
The first thing I noticed is the fabric represented with the indentions between the ribs of each airfoil control. Next, I noticed the separate elevators and the replacement horizontal stabs.

Very fine recessed lines demarcate the trim tabs. Nicely done, CMK!

Instructions
A small instruction sheet is provided. It is clearly printed and organized. Each sprue is illustrated and each part numbered. Each part identified by number in the assembly steps.

This intriguing set is packaged in a sturdy plastic bubble with a cardstock backing.

Conclusion
With J2M3 Raiden Control Surfaces CMK has expanded their range of impressive upgrade sets for Hasegawa's 1/72 J2M3 "Jack." Crisp casting, high detail and separately cast parts enhances the option to more accurately model a J2M3.

These ailerons and partial empennage can stand alone or be combined with the other sets to upgrade and enhance Hasegawa's old J2M3 into the pride of your collection. Recommended!
