F-4J/S Phantom II Detail Set 49-319

by: Chuck Shanley [ CRS ]

Eduard’s 49-319 Detail set is another of their fine colored photo etch sets.

This set contains three frets; two provide Cockpit detailing parts for both the front and rear seat. The instrument and switch clusters are done in varying shades of color, not just a solid black background and show exquisite detail. Missing from these frets are detail components for the ejection seats, these are however offered in other Eduard sets 49-014 and 49-015, with are solely for detailing the Martin Baker Mk 7 ejection seats.

The third fret in this set (49-319) contains components for detailing the canopy framing; extensive detailing is possible as all the framing components are provided. Also on this fret are landing gear and landing gear bay detailing components, some of which are quite small and will require great care in removal from the fret and handling (i.e. Parts are provided to show hydraulic lines). Other exterior detail components include blade and tee antennas, enhancements for the sidewinder missiles (exhaust nozzles and mounting points), plating for the tail hook assembly, wing fences, and framing for the recognition panels.

Conclusion
I think anyone using this set would be pleased with the enhancement to their model, I would however recommend also getting the two sets mentioned earlier 49-014 and 49-015 to detail the ejection sets. Anyone using this set will want to have the seats look right too.
SUMMARY
The set is designed for use with the 1/48 Hasegawa kit, and includes parts for both the J and S versions. The instructions are pictorial and clearly show part placement and original kit parts that need to be removed. The instructions also clearly show which parts are for which version. The set is definitely designed with the more advanced modeler in mind, due to the complexity and size of some of the parts; I would recommend the use of a Hold and Fold or Etch mate product.

I've been building kits since about the mid 1950's. I've built all kinds of subjects, but for the past 20 years or so I've seemed to focus mainly on 1/72 Aircraft and Armor. Why 1/72, mainly for space conservation I build alot. I build primarily for my own enjoyment, and Armorama has helped to en...
