The Carabiniers-à-Cheval (Horse Carabiniers) were mounted troops in the service of France.
Their origins date back to the mid-16th century, when they were created as elite elements of the French light cavalry, armed with carbines but then gradually evolved towards semi-independent status during the 18th century. They only became independent units as late as 1788, when a two-regiment heavy cavalry corps was created. From the French Revolutionary Wars onwards, they were the senior heavy cavalry regiments in the French army, rose to prominence during the Napoleonic Wars and were disbanded in 1871, after the fall of the Second French Empire.

The French Carabiniers-à-Cheval bust is based on the original sculpt of the French Cuirassier Trumpet-Major 1813 by Carl Reid who is one of the most talented and popular sculptors around. The French Cuirassier Trumpet-Major 1813 bust has been remodeled by our very own Kitmaker member Paul Dobson (PeeDee), who is very knowledgeable on the Napoleonic era. Pictures of the remodeled sculpt are shown.

Due to being only just cast in time for Euromilitaire the busts only come packaged in a couple of plastic bags. The parts are cast in a light buff colour. The kit is broken down into seven resin parts, being, head, left arm, right arm, torso, right hand with trumpet, two tassels, and a length of thin wire.
No casting flaws are present but the large parts do have small casting blocks to remove. The smaller parts, of which only the two tassels for the trumpet are used for this bust, are cast onto a resin block, so care needs to be taken removing the parts.
The parts once cleaned up go together very well with just a little filler needed for the joins, most notable for the head and right arm.
The bust is posed as if on horseback with his right arm held aloft with the trumpet. The pose is dramatic and gives you a sense of movement if you position the trumpet tassels and sling flowing behind the trumpet, which gives the impression of the parts catching in the wind. The mouth open on the figure adds to the pose.
No paint guide was given for this bust, but looking online soon turned up the correct colours to be used. The tunic is blue, with white lace. The helmet is brass with the "N" part silver. The plume on the helmet is white.
