introduction

MrBlack Publications added the 11th handbook to the Figure Modelling series. The new book catches the high standard of the company with the printing quality and content. It is in the same format as the former books - A4 size, matt laminated cover and 52 pages. Despite the page number stays the same, it seems the number of chapters is more than the latest books. Besides covering the standard subjects like assemblying, painting in oils and acrylics, articles include extreme subjects like making bases and sculpting figures. Step-by-step presentation in numeric sequence and added texts make them easier to follow and more helpful.
inside the book

The book includes seven chapters with models from different scales and time periods. The chapters are ;

  • Painting Realistic Metal,Leather & Fabric : Christos Katselos explains building and painting steps of Pegaso Models 75 mm figure 75-101 Byzantine Draconius, 6th Century and figure base for the figure. 15 photos show preparation of the figure and base to painting process. Very good idea to divide figure to a few pieces during assembly to paint it easier. 28 photos in numeric sequence and step-by-step explanatory text for painting metal,leather,fabric and wood parts and shield pattern. Color chart is provided in the article and 6 photos for the final.

  • Painting Arabic Skins & Fabric Textures : Another useful article by Ernesto Reyes Stalhuth on painting boxart of Grenadier Miniatures 200 mm bust GMB1/902 Afghan Tribesman 1842 by master sculptor Carl Reid. He gives all his recipes for painting face, fur coat, fabric and leather parts, musket and sword. 20 photos for process and 2 photos for final product.

  • Forest Scenery Featuring Water : Ioannis Tsiktsiris describes how he made the base for his award winning model Pegaso Models 75 mm figure 75-030 Hidatsa Warrior 1835,Free Spirit. Besides explaining the painting of figure and horse with color recipes, he shares how to make the base,branches, tree trunks and water. 34 photos in numbers for step-by-step and 7 photos for the finished scene.

  • Painting a Colorful Figure and Creating a Realistic Pavement & Arch : Jesus Gamarra shares his award winning painting experience of YS Masterpieces 90 mm figure HF90-002 Ottoman Warrior with scenery. First he tells about painting the scenery. As Ottoman uniforms were very colorful, he describes all parts one by one wih color codes for inner vest, shirt, vest with open sleeves, trousers and leggings, sash, belts and pouch, turban, shoes and weapons like pistol,musket, knife and sword. Very explanatory text but no photos for painting process, only 2 photos for figure parts and 4 photos for the painted figure.

  • Painting a Small Scale Bust with an Eastern Front Theme : Carl Startin paints GRX Diffusion 150 mm Stalingrad bust in oils telling the colors he used for Winsor & Newton series paints. Nice text with 4 photos for the final.

  • Sculpting and Painting a Large Scale Bust : Ju-Won Jung briefly explains the sculpting and painting process of Galapogos Miniatures fantasy bust 180 mm Kyle,Heir to the Blue Sun.7 photos for sculpting and 10 photos for the painting in Vallejo Colors.

  • Painting a Bust of a New Zealand Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) Trooper 1940-43 : Mike Butler paints Young Miniatures 180 mm bust YM1832 British LRDG 1942
    North Africa. He shares his color recipes for face and cloth painting with 3 photos of the finished bust.
    conclusion

    Quality and profitability of this series proved itself both for new and experienced modelers. The book is again a great reference for all, just one point, some articles has very few photos added to a detailed text. I wish articles will include more on progress photos in next issues.
