A few months ago, Masterbox Ltd. made the announcement that they would be producing a range of Pilot and Groundcrew figures in 1/32nd scale. Here's the first.
3201 - "Famous Pilots of WWII" Part 1

This, injection-moulded set covers six pilots of WWII from 6 different countries.

The subjects covered are:

1) Sakai Saburo of Japan
2) Werner Moelders of Germany
3) Richard Ira Bong of USA
4) James Edgar "Johnny" Johnson of UK
5) Lily Litviak of USSR
6) Albert Marcel of France

Also included, as a bonus, are biographies of the six featured pilots. Although they are 'specific', the details should be sufficient to use them in a more generic manner. For those unaware of Masterbox, their quality in 1/35th scale has been exceptional so there is no reason to assume it'll be anything different in tTHIS scale. It's always a good way to get hold of some injection-moulded figures in this scale - previously these have been pretty rare!

Nice start, but I would rather have seen Adolf Galland as Sam has several 109's in his markings. Can't wait to see more in this range.

Hi there Neat, although I have to admit I'd rather have everyday pilots than recognisable aces. They should be excellent because the sculptor, A. Gagarin, also produces the fine resin figures in Rest Models' range. I can't help but wonder why Masterbox didn't release their recent Luftwaffe Helferinnen set in 1:32 too - maybe they'll scale them up? All the best Rowan

I'm in regular contact with Masterbox and have had at least one conversation over their plans in 1/32nd. The idea behind it was to go for both markets - historical figure painters AND the Aviation modeler. Personally I think they ARE sufficiently generic to be used with any fighter of the countries represented. What will be intresting is when they get their ground crews into production...

I've just had an interesting reply from Masterbox:

If it`s any help (and i know it`s in 1/35th scale) but Tamiya did a two figure set of a German soldier and pilot. To me the pilot looks a lot like Adolf Galland so you could try that if you`re desperate. As for this set and any others that follow count me in as i definately WILL be buying these when they become available.

Hi again It's great to see that Masterbox monitor threads like this for the opinions of their customers and take the trouble to respond. Further aces sets could include US Navy, Finnish and Commonwealth pilots. If Masterbox are stuck for a suitable Italian ace, I'd suggest Adriano Visconti for starters. All the best Rowan

How about some of the pilot figures running as if scambling to their aircraft or climbing up the wings? Good for the dio builders. Espcially marines for carriers or the south Pacific.
