Airfix will be re-releasing in the new year its 1/72 scale Phantom FG.1 and the subject of this re-release is the distinctive looking ‘Black Mike’
”No serious discussion about iconic British post war jet aircraft could be had without including the magnificent aircraft pictured above, Phantom FG.1 XV582 ‘Black Mike’, one of the most distinctive individual aircraft to ever see Royal Air Force service. Making its first flight in early 1969, Phantom FG.1 XV582 was delivered to the RAF later the same year and would go on to see extensive service with Nos 43 and 111 fighter Squadron’s, as well as time with No.228 OCU. She would eventually be the only FG.1 Phantom to serve with No.228 Operational Conversion Unit and the first to exceed 5000 flying hours. XV582 was also used in the record breaking ‘Lands End to John O’Groats Run’ on 1st April 1988, when the aircraft covered the 590 mile distance in just 46 minutes and 44 seconds – an impressive average speed of over 757 mph.
The fateful decision which ensured McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1 XV582 would become one of the most famous jet powered aircraft to see RAF service occurred in the late 1980s, when she was selected as the aviation canvas for a striking squadron commemoration for the Leuchars based ‘Treble One’ Squadron. Intended to make a high-profile tribute to the illustrious history of this famous Royal Air Force squadron and specifically to the period when it had operated large formations of both Hawker Hunters (The Black Arrows) and later, English Electric Lightnings during the classic jet era, the Phantom was given a striking gloss black paint scheme and further embellished with the famous yellow squadron markings of No.111 Sqn. ‘The Tremblers’.
The latest release from our hugely popular McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1 tooling (A06019) is scheduled for release over the coming few weeks and whilst there are two attractive scheme options included with the kit, the magnificent box artwork featured above will surely make this handsome Phantom an irresistible option for thousands of modellers.”

The other possible marking option that is illustrated is for a RAF 43 Squadron Phantom FG.1 XV573
