In the latest newsletter Revell have announced immament release of the newly tooled B-17F Flying Fortress, the famous „Memphis Belle” in 1:72 scale. The release of model kit is linked with the DVD movie „Flying Fortress. B17 - Luftkrieg über Europa”. Below we have published original Revell announcement.
The B-17 bomber were together with the B-24 ‘liberator‘ the backbone of the US bomber squadrons during World War II. On the occasion of the „Flying Fortress“ DVD movie launch we put together for you in our May contest five attractive fan packages. The winners can look forward to receive one DVD plus one plastic model kit of the new B-17F Memphis Belle.
The movie is about the daring pilots of the famous ‘flying fortress’. The DVD is an exciting historic report full of action on the use of the B-17 bomber in World War II. A subject matter that also plays an important role in our assortment of true-to-original historic airplane models. Besides the brand-new model of the B-17F in 1:72 we also have in this range the direct successor, the B-17G. This has been elected as model of the year 2010 from the readers of the German ‘ModellFan’ magazine.
Die B-17F was the first mass production ’flying fortress‘. Die most famous machine out of this series was the Boeing-produced B-17F-10-BO which was supplied on 15th July 1942 and put into service at the 324th Bomber Squadron, 91st Bomber Group in Bassingbourn, England. It gained its stardom as it survived as first US Army Air Force bomber 25 sorties in Europe and became the star in a Hollywood propaganda film.

Our very detailed model of the Memphis Bell will be supplied in May. The model consists of 220 single parts, has a length of 31 cm and a wingspan of 43.7 cm.

Whilst this news is most welcome to the 1/72nd community (of which,in my youth,i used to be one)i wish they`d have thought of re-tooling their 1/48th scale kit at the same time. I got really excited when i picked one of these at my local toy store for what i thought was a bargain price, only to discover what a horror it is !. If i was a teacher my report score to Revell would be :- Nice try, could do better.

I, too, would prefer an updated kit in a larger scale (there are plans for a 32 scale Flying Fortress in the works after the B-25s in that heft are all released), but I'm glad to see more early planes. The DVD looks interesting, and I would also recommend Donald Miller's Masters of the Air, THE book about the strategic air war over Germany (though it also has some extensive material about fighter escorts and ground attack fighter bombers). The Memphis Belle is a great story, but it's also not the ONLY heroic story from the Eighth Air Force. I hope some supporting decals will bring to the fore some of the other heroes from that theater.

I can't wait, first off this kit will hopefully allow you to make the Belle, which the Academy kit doesn't. There are plenty of decals to make other "F"s already, hopefully there will be more.

Jowady - The Academy B-17F most certainly does let you build the Memphis Belle. It's been out a good while - I have one in my stash. The Revell one will most likely be a better kit but the Academy one is still not bad. thanks Mike
