Hanomag R40 Tractor

by: Peter Allen [ FLITZER ]

The Hanomag R40 Tractor is one of the less known machines used by the German Armed Forces. It was introduced during 1942, serving with the Luftwaffe and the Kriegsmarine. The R40 was adapted from an agricultural tractor with minor modifications for the military role.
THE KIT
The kit comes in a tiny but stout black box with manila coloured labels.
Inside there are two plastic re-sealable bags, the bigger one for holding the resin parts and the other smaller bag for the metal parts.

Type: Resin/metal

The kit's contents are:
7 Resin parts
23 Metal parts
RESIN PARTS
Main assembly parts for the tractor come in the usual buff coloured resin. The quality is well up to the market norm.
Unlike the Opel Blitz Fuel Tanker by the same manufacturer this kit is virtually air-bubble free with no sign on any of the surfaces that will be visible when the model is put together.
The detail and lines are good.
The engine cover, bumper, mudguards and running boards, canvas canopy, chassis and gearbox come as separate parts, all well moulded with good detail.
There is some flash and rough edges so a general clean up is necessary for all these parts.
METAL PARTS
All will need a lot of filing and careful clean up, but the detail looks very good, especially the wheels and tyres and suspension cart springs. Other metal parts include headlights, steering wheel, exhaust stack, axles/dif, and sundry items including a set of tiny levers etc.

The initial dry fit, before any clean up, looks as if the kit will go together quite well without any undue problems. The windscreen will need glazing with acetate clear plastic.
Decals will need to be sourced elsewhere as none are included with the kit.
INSTRUCTIONS
Again there are better examples out there, but the assembly drawings are basic but understandable.
As the kit is a simple affair it should go together quite well and the illustration will suffice well enough.
There is a summary of the history and a written parts list, and on this kit, a very basic painting guide .
CONCLUSION.
All together this is a nice little kit that should produce an interesting addition for an airstrip dio.
It’s not too expensive but it would be nice to at least have a basic set of decals and a better painting guide included at this price.
As decals are not included and the paint guide is just for the basic camo colour, I think I will need some help from our friendly AFV/Truck department.
