Hawker Hurricane

by: Martin Ramsden [ BRANDYDOGUK ]

The Hawker Hurricane was the backbone of fighter command during the battle of Britain. Whilst not having the performance of the more famous Spitfire, it was a more stable gun platform, could take more damage, and the closely grouped armament meant a more concentrated burst of fire, ideal for attacking bombers.

The Kit
This kit has been around for quite a few years now but is still a quality product. First thing to comment on is the size of the box; it is big, but thankfully the base if made of thicker cardboard than normal and there is a thick card insert to strengthen the lid. The parts are molded in light grey plastic and come on 5 main sprues, plus one sprue of clear parts and a set of rubber tyres. The parts are virtually flash free and there will be only a small amount of cleaning up to do. The panel lines are nicely engraved and the fabric on the fuselage and control surfaces is nicely depicted. There is the option for leaving off the panels covering the engine and gun bays and the detail in these areas looks to be good. The instrument panel consists of the main panel with holes for the dials, and a clear part with the instruments which glues in from the back. This will allow easier painting of the instrument dials. The main undercarriage can be in either lowered or raised position, and the canopy can be open or closed. The transparencies are clear and blemish free. The rubber tyres on the other hand will need a fair bit of tidying up as the mold lines are quite thick. A stand is included, this fits into holes in the bottom piece under the radiator; if it is not to be used these holes will require filling.

Instructions
The instructions are a small booklet. Assembly is shown as diagrams, in places they are quite complicated. It will need a fair bit of study and dry fitting to find the best order to assemble each stage. The only camouflage instructions are the colour pictures on the front and back of the booklet. Paint colours are given as Humbrol paint numbers.

Decals
The decals are in register and give two options, both battle of Britain aircraft, either VY*Q of 85 squadron or A*LK of 87 squadron. A few aircraft stencils are included.

Conclusion
This is a good quality kit, there is a fair amount of detail included and there is scope for the super detailer to really go to town on this one.
