For all the beginners out there, once you have decided to take modeling to the next level, you need to start using references to allow greater accuracy in your modeling. Often the instructions can be misleading or even downright inaccurate in its recommended paint scheme. Even the very shape of the parts can be wrong, and details over simplified or nonexistent. This is why it is important to obtain credible references for any project you intend to go all out on. While some buy lots of books to do so, I personally find this costly, when working with a somewhat limited budget. This is where the internet can come in handy.

One option is google images, but I usually just use google to look for links to restoration projects. Especially with old aircraft, there are many people out there who are working to restore them after years of deterioration. These photos can be invaluable for getting information on the structure and interiors of these aircraft, especially given that modern photography can reveal so much more detail. Just be cautious about color, because a restored aircraft often lacks the weathering that a plane would get during actual use.

Honestly, nothing beats a good book. I hate to read more than a few pages on screen as it is very tiring. OTOH there is the big advantage of databases to have a search feature. BUT those databases have to be established and maintained and people will seldom grant access for free (e.g. some people have very good data bases for book contents or picture indices)

I agree that if you do just one model of a certain field of interest, it is too expensive to buy a special book (mostly very expensive). But there are Forums where you can ask your questions and mostly will get helpful answers.

In general Wikipedia is a good starting point for all kinds of reseach. Google can be helpful but has 90% rubbish or comercial hits nowadays ... for which you would need a metasearch to filter this out.
