I have another one. This time I propose a grand build off. Not unlike Jean-Luc and Rowan's dual Dora build some time ago, but on a much larger scale.

The idea is this; a kit is selected by a shadowy cabal of moderators, and then all entrants will buy and build that specific kit. There would be no limit on aftermarket parts and modding, but the core product would be the same.

I think this would kill three birds with one stone:

1. It would really illustrate the different techniques of our many talented members, highlighting their varying approaches to the same challenges.

2. If a kit from a sponsor to this website were selected, it would surely demonstrate the communities' regard for its' benefactors.

3. It would satisfy any competitive urges members may feel.

In regard to the final point, I would further propose that at the end of the campaign we could use the Model of the Month system to elect first, second and third place builds. Adding a 'clash of the titans' angle to the campaign.

Thoughts?

I think you have too much time on your hands and you think too much . . . . . . . I'm in !

I was just thinking, why not re-use the mason jar of doom to select the target kit from a list of possibilities ?

All the air is sucked from the room. All eyes are inexplicably fixed on... The mason jar of doom!

I would agree. As much as it pains me to say it I think it would have to be a 1/72 kit. Both because it seems the most widely accepted scale and it's cheaper.

As for subject matter... It has to be one of those "you can never have too many" birds. Spitfire, Warhawk, Fw190 spring to mind. Maybe an albatross or a camel... Very tricky decision.

Secretly I was hoping you'd choose 1/72, because that's the scale I model. I would join if that's what you go with.
On the other hand, there must be many who only build in 1/48.
What if it's a kit available in both scales from the same company?
Just another thought.

i would stay away from anything that needs rigging as it will put people off, but agree it needs to be a popular subject.

i'll start with tamiya's 1/48 spitfire mk1 , its a very good kit that goes together easily with plenty of detail for people who dont want to spend loads on aftermarket.
also its relativly cheap, in the uk its about £18

Hi there

I'd go along along with Tamiya's 1:48 Spit. It's a nice, cheap kit that's widely available, and there are loads of aftermarket decals to go with the subject. Maybe you could open it up to allow their 1:72 version too?

All the best

But it is an excellent idea, go for it !!!

Maybe you could poll which scale/model should be selected?

Well let's see. Some inexpensive but excellent kits...

Obviously the Tamiya Spitfire, the new Airfix Emil, the Revell F86 maybe..... Affordability is key I think.

I'm in, sounds like a good idea! Will probably be a bit damaging for ones self-esteem though considering the level of skill of the aeroscale Community

I Think we should chose something affordable, with great detail, lots of aftermarket plus being an interesting subject I hindsight, that might be a problem , looking forward to see the discussion

Happy modelling

First choice would be the Hobby Boss 1/32 P-61
If I can't rig enough votes to get that through, the Tamiya Spit would be an excellent subject.

Cheers, D

I built that Tamiya Spit about a year ago, got the Tamiya Emil in the stash, typical, I did it the wrong way round AGAIN. Seriously, it is a good kit and I am interested but I need about year to finish what I am committed to now. The only problem I have with the Mk1 Spit was it was only really flown by the RAF so varients are somewhat limited, a later mark or a P-40 or P-51 would give a lot more varients, even the Eduard Polikarpov I-16 could give a wider choice. As for the scale thing, we have to be adaptable, I prefer 1/48 (easier on the aging eyes) but I'll build 1/72 if required. I agree, rigged aircraft will take some people too far out of their comfort zone.

See p40 calls to me a bit, there's a few readily available kits out there.. And polykarpov would be very interesting...

Doesnt Tamiya make a Mk V spit in both scales too? I'm no expert on Spitfires, but would that provide more options?

Revell F86
Eduard Emil
Eduard Spit
Eduard I-16
