What's the best?

I model in 1/72, just because that's what I did as a kid and the kits are cheaper.

What do you reckon?

As a kid, i started in 1/72 as well. It was cheapest and therefore that was what i could buy from pocket money.

Growing older i started building whatever scale. That was a bad idea; I had many models but no collection.

Now I have settled for 1/48 because for me personally it gives the best balance between cost, detail, work , model availability, model size and because i have the (very) long term ambition to build a complete airfield one day.

I know people who build all scales and are perfectly happy with it, and I know people who build exclusively 1/32 or bigger and happily store most of their models on the attic in boxes because the things are too big to put on display all the time.

One fellow I know is making 1/72 airplanes that in quality and detail exceed by far what I hope to be ever able to do myself in 1/48.

Building a smaller scale is definitively not equal to making poor quality models or doing something less valuable. This only to say that it firstly depends on what makes you happy, not on the scale itself.

Still, for me personally, 1/48 is king.

A great range, decent size kits which are still of reasonable size allowing making larger diorama's, and the set of vehicles, figures, AFV... on the market is growing fast since tamiya started producing AFV in 1/48.

Hmm yes, I am intrigued by the 1/48 scale. The very last kit I built as a kid was an Otaki 1/48 scale Mustang. I remember being impressed by the fit and detail, compare to what I was building before.

But, as soon as I got back into the hobby I went and bought a massive pile of 1/72 kits. Now I want to build them all and line them up next to each other, so I can't contemplate getting a 1/48 scale kit as they will look diffrent !! Maybe after I've built a few more.

I see the Otaki kits have been reissued, maybe I'll pick up that Mustang again.....

Seconded. There is no "best" anyway (this comes from someone whose stash has 6 in this scale, 69 in that scale, 110 in another scale, and 40 in the last scale).

I think you build what you like, that's the most important thing. I love 1/72 scale because, as I've said before, it is easy for single and multi-engined aircraft to be in the same scale. That allows one to see just how large one aircraft is compared to another. I understand the draw of the larger scales, sometimes I feel like I'm in the minority on Aeroscale but that's okay by me! As I live in a small flat, my display cabinet only measures 900mm wide, and it has eight shelves. I model WWI aircraft, and my cabinet would only hold four models per shelf. As I want to model about 70 aircraft, I obviously have a problem. The answer is to model in 1/72 s well s 1/48.
The two scales look strange next to each other, so I put the 1/72 kits behind and above the 1/48, as if attacking from further away.

Mostly 1/72 for me. Got 2 x 1/72 and 1 x 1/48 on the desk right now, so clearly I'm no prurist. Not to mention the 1/700, 1/3xx ships, a smattering ot 1/32 A/C and 1/35 AFV in the stash.
