HB and Revell F-105 "Thud" build

After reviewing the
Hobby Boss 1/48th F-105D Thunderchief I decided that it would go to the front of the build pile.
Now as I have the old Monogram/Revell boxing of the F-105D, I decided (in not one of my brighter moments) that the only way this one would get built is at the same time as the HB version, so off we go.
First up are the ejection seats. The HB one is made up of several parts where the Revell one is a single piece.
After painting. The Revell is on the left.
Both have harness's moulded on. The Revell seat is a little wider then the HB offering.
Next up are the cockpits. a few more parts for the HB kit, but the detail is pretty even.
Both cockpits built. HB supply decals for the instrument panels.
I didn't go to mad with the Revell cockpit as I will put the kit supplied pilot in the pit.

It would probably have taken me 3 or 4 days to get that much done.

I pulled the 1/32 Trump Thud out of the closet a few days ago. If you keep me entertained with your build, I might even build it...

Looks good! Are you going to bite the bullet and rescribe the Monogram kit? I've pulled my copy out a few times and done some preliminary clean-up, but the rescribing bit scares me a little so I toss it back in the cupboard....Looking forward to the next instalment, Brad

Very interesting build comparison, Andy. I was just messing around with the Revell kit the other day, but decided not to buy it - yet

Keen to watch this build to the end...I've got the Revell kit in my stash. Glad I'm ot the only one out there that is a little put off by the idea of scribing panel lines. Guess my being a rookie is really apparent about right now! Keep the pictures rolling. Nice build.

The Revell/Monogram kit seems to be in everyone's stash, but you don't see a lot built
.
Anyhoo, time for an update.
This time its the engines (or rather lack of one for the Revell kit
).
The HB kit has a lovely engine, which unless you leave the rear fuselage off you won't see it
. The Revell kit just has the exhaust . Detail wise the HB kit wins hands down.

And you said I was speed-building! The progress you're making on this double-build is a bit frightening for a slowcoach like me...
Going back a stage or two - although the Hobby Boss seat is obviously the better detailed of the two, it's also a different shape - the headrest and other areas. Do you have any idea which is the more accurate?

. The amount of projects and campaigns I decided to do, speed building is the only option
.
Now as for the ejection seats, I have done some quick research (something I didn't do while building them I might add lol).
The F-105 Thunderchief was equipped with a seat designed by Republic Aircraft and as such never went in anything else (I think ), now as for accuracy, err neither are 100% accurate but the HB kit comes the closest, even though the Revell headrest is more true to life.

Edit. I wish I had looked at the seat before painting mine as the colour is waaayyyy off lol. And looking at the seat I might add some wiring to the HB one.

The real shock is to see the amount of harness and paraphernalia on the real seat. Moulded-on harness comes nowhere near... you begin to wonder why they bothered?!

Interesting picture, Andy. I will agree with Rowan, both seats are actually very far from the real one, although Revell might be (sort of) excused as they include a pilot that will fill out the seat.

I have managed to get a little more done, in fact I got so carried away I forgot to take any pics until i got to the primed stage.
The builds will split after the camo scheme's go on as the HB kit has a lot more dangly/showing bits on it.

Two of three colours of the camo scheme is on. Tamiya paints used, sprayed freehand.
Incase your wondering how fast I am actually building, the Thuds were primed yesterday, with the camo going on this morning.
I reckon i could get the Revell Thud finished tonight, if I pull my finger out.

Finger pulled out. One finished Revell/Monogram F-105D.
Not as detailed as the HB kit (the undercarriage legs are better though, even if they are weak), but a very easy build. Fit wise it is pretty good.
There is one part of this kit that is not accurate for a D version, the tips of the wings are for the G. HB mould the wing tips separate for the D and G versions where the Mono kit I believe has the same wings as the G kit.

Thanks guys. The Revell/Monogram kit is pretty straightforward to build.
And now (not such as fast build) the Hobby Boss F-105D Thunderchief.

Wow,,I cant believe how fast you build mate.
It cant be healthy surely, definately a man on a mission!
The Hobbyboss Mig is my favourite, the open nosecone etc really make for an interesting look.
Looking forward to the next installment of the Century Series.
